Service Projects

The New England Chapter of the International Institute of Mahayoga & Natural Hygiene (IMANAH) is organizing a school supplies drive for children in Madurai, India who are suffering from the effects of HIV/AIDS. We are collecting donations of money and supplies for the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Madurai Branch, which is an NGO working to provide treatment and support for these children. Currently there are 150 children in Madurai who are either inflicted or affected by AIDS. However, due to limited funding, FPAI has only been able to fund 20 of those children - this year the program enrollment has doubled to 40 children. There are still over 100 children who are not receiving any support. The over all goal of the project is to improve the quality of life for all children in Madurai who are suffering from the effects of AIDS.

The Problems:Discrimination against people living with AIDS and their families is widespread in India. People whose AIDS status is known may loose their homes, jobs and may be denied medical care. Children who are HIV positive, or whose caregivers are positive may be denied access to school, or treated badly there. The children are kept at home to care for sick family members or be unable to pay school fees because the family wage earner is sick or deceased. Extended family members may refuse to care for children orphaned by AIDS, especially those who are HIV positive. The children affected and infected are facing problems such as discontinuation of education, malnutrition, lack of medical care and discrimination.

Some Solutions:The FPAI Madurai Branch is currently caring for 40 children who are affected by AIDS. They support the children's educational needs by paying school tuition, buying them uniforms, and providing school supplies. To help curb the problems with health that these children face, they are supplying a care package of soap, toothpaste, comb, coconut oil and vitamins. Every year the chapter organizes an annual picnic for the children and their families to help encourage them through a psycho-social support network. Additionally, the branch provides the children with monthly check-ups and medical care. Through their positive, affirming environment, they hope to help change the opportunities for these children so that they too can have a fulfilling life ahead.

How You Can Help Make A Difference:

  • Spread the word! Good publicity can help more people become aware of the issue.
  • Donate art and school supplies such as markers, color pencils, crayons, construction paper, notebooks, and children's books. FPAI is working on creating a children's corner. Many of the children must wait around for their parents to get treatment with nothing to occupy their time but the loneliness they feel.
  • Donate any amount of money that you can afford. 100% of the money will go to the charity with no overhead costs.
  • Help transport goods. Going to India? Volunteer to carry supplies for the children. Chennai is the most helpful for us, but we always welcome ideas. Tell us your point of destination and we can even give you the suitcases.
  • Volunteer with IMANAH to promote this cause! Your service will be greatly appreciated. High school students will receive community service hours. College students can add it to their resumes. We will honor you in our website for your service.
